What's on this agenda

This is Chapel Hill's organizational meeting following the 2025 town election, not a session with routine legislative business. Jess Anderson takes the oath of office as mayor, and the four newly elected council members - Camille Berry, Wes McMahon, Paris Miller-Foushee, and Louie Rivers III - are sworn in. The council opened its post-election organizational meeting with tributes to outgoing member Adam Searing. Council Member Sharp read a resolution honoring Searing for his contributions to environmental stewardship, public health, parks and recreation, and civic engagement, and Searing reflected on his term, citing constituent service and infrastructure work such as skate parks and sidewalks. District Court Judge Hathaway Pendergrass then swore in Jess Anderson as mayor.

After a short recess for nameplate changes, Judge Pendergrass swore in Camille Berry, Clerk of Superior Court Mark Kleinschmidt swore in Wes McMahon and Louie Rivers III, and District Court Judge Joal Broun swore in Paris Miller-Foushee, seating the 2025-2027 council. Council Member Ryan moved, seconded by McMahon, to elect Berry mayor pro tem, and the vote carried unanimously. Ryan then moved, seconded by Berry, to approve the year's council liaison and board appointments, which also carried unanimously. The meeting closed with remarks from Anderson and a group photograph of the new council.
