Wake County commissioners took up a 17-item consent agenda covering a Sheriff's Office contract for electronic-controlled weapons, construction contracts for the East Regional Library and the John H. Before the vote, commissioners pulled the purchase of 2802 and 2818 New Birch Drive from the consent agenda to discuss it separately, then approved it unanimously, authorizing the county manager to buy the site for a new Southeast Raleigh community library to replace the county's leased Rock Quarry Road branch. The rest of the consent agenda, including the Axon weapons contract, two construction awards, the Blue Ridge Road building purchase, the Duke Energy easement, housing loans, and MOUs with East Carolina University and Wake schools, passed as a block. Coming out of closed session, the board appointed Roger Askew interim county attorney at $291,879 a year, effective October 15, succeeding the retiring Scott Warren.

All votes carried 6-0 with Commissioner Jackson absent: the amended agenda, prior meeting minutes, the amended consent agenda, the New Birch Drive property purchase, and adjournment. The board also voted unanimously in closed session to appoint Roger Askew interim county attorney.

  4. A resident of Avent West asked the board to keep the library where it is, citing what it means to her family.

  8. A resident thanked a commissioner for listening and said he preferred keeping the library at its current site over a second location.
  9. A Wake Forest resident said he has spent two years seeking help with gunfire, reckless driving, and air-quality problems on a private road, and said the sheriff's office told him it could not intervene.
  10. A Wake Forest resident said the road, once a rural road, now serves a major subdivision and asked the county to bring it up to Class A standards.

Seven speakers asked the board to keep the Athens Drive library at its current location rather than relocate it. Two Wake Forest residents described public-safety and road-condition problems on a road near the Perry Estate area. One speaker touched on the State of the County address, a cricket match, and the new Southeast Raleigh library.
