What's on this agenda

One rezoning inside the Chapel Hill joint planning area, and a page of subdivision ordinance amendments that went missing from last month's package. The published agenda packet is larger than this site's document relay will pass through; this reading is taken from the approved minutes.

Meeting recap

What happened, drawn from the records published after the meeting. Minutes

The rezoning is an unusual creature: about 15.5 acres at 1651 Old Lystra Road that sit inside Chapel Hill's designated transition area under the joint land use plan shared by the county and the two towns. The county's planning board recommends on it, but the districts and rules applied are the town's, not the county's - the request runs from a low density residential district to a conditional district under Chapel Hill's own ordinance. Part of the site falls inside a protected zone.

The board recommended approval unanimously with an added condition on traffic. A member asked that the applicant work with residents of a neighbouring road and the state highway agency on signage - a no-through-way sign or whatever the agency recommends - and the chair extended that to any reasonable traffic control the agency might propose, including a speed bump.

The ordinance item came with an apology. The planning director told the board that at the previous meeting a member had asked what happens when staff make a mistake administering the ordinance, that he had taken exception to the question, and that he then omitted a page from the amendment package he brought them. Nothing in the substance changed. The package also carries a friendly amendment extending notification mailings from 14 days to 30.

How the votes went

Every vote unanimous: the May regular minutes, the May training summary, the rezoning with its added traffic condition, and the subdivision ordinance amendments.
