Cary's historic preservation commission got its first look on November 12 at a proposal for a town historic marker programme, built on an earlier committee recommendation. Staff and the commission would run it together, with uniform design standards and set procedures for application, review and maintenance; staff would give technical help and a first content review and the commission would approve final inscriptions.

Members were asked to study the draft materials and comparable programmes from Forsyth County and Winston-Salem before December. They also showed strong interest in pursuing additional state-level markers — an interest the state later closed off for the Nancy Jones House, whose marker application had already been denied under criteria that no longer allow markers for individual buildings.

On the Nancy Jones House, staff reported no major maintenance news but said they are arranging a visit with the State Historic Preservation Office to identify potential Certified Local Government grant projects. Commissioners were invited to the on-site meeting, capped at three so as not to create a quorum.

Staff also reported handing over the local historic landmark plaque for the Levi and Clarence Braswell House to its owner, that the Ivey-Ellington House would be recognised at the council's November 20 meeting for its Anthemion Award, and that the Certified Local Government annual report is in progress. Draft 2026 meeting dates were circulated with only November shifting, to the 4th.

At the Page-Walker Hotel the painting project is finished, elevator repairs are set for late December into January, drainage problems are being worked through using the original 1988 blueprints, and group tours have increased among seniors and homeschoolers. The Victorian Christmas open house was set for December 6.

How the votes went

The agenda and the October 8 minutes were adopted without objection. A vice chair was nominated and elected unanimously on a motion by Rachel Palisin seconded by Bill Chase.
