Cary's Greenway Committee, which advises the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources (PRCR) Advisory Board and, through it, the Town Council, meets Feb. 19 to hear from the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) on the Triangle Bikeway project and to elect its chair and vice chair for the year. The committee also gets a schedule for when the PRCR System Plan and the town's Bike Plan will go to Council for adoption, and an update on this year's 100 Miles greenway celebration.

Chair Renee Miller called the meeting to order at 6 p.m. with eleven committee members present, along with two Teen Council representatives, Advisory Board Liaison Chris Herndon, and staff members Sandi Bailey, Todd Milam and Ch'ressa Johnson. No member of the public chose to speak during the public comment period.

Cara Russell of CAMPO presented the history, work to date and next steps on the Triangle Bikeway project. Members asked about the eastern terminus near the Highway 54/55 junction, whether the route would run mainly within NCDOT's I-40 right of way, and the purpose of design-option loops shown on the map for the Research Triangle Park area. On funding, Russell said the project involves Raleigh, Cary, Research Triangle Park, Durham, Chapel Hill and Wake, Durham and Orange counties; put the estimated cost of the eastern half at about $80 million; and said funding levels will determine which phases get built and when. Detailed design work has not started on the eastern end and has not begun on the western end. A public survey on the project closes Feb. 25, 2026.

With no additional nominations, members elected Renee Miller as Chair and Kelly Broccio as Vice Chair by acclamation.

Under the PRCR Advisory Board report, a member asked what greenway funding the committee should advocate for. Liaison Chris Herndon described ways members can advocate, and Bailey said the Optimist Farm Greenway and the Higgins IV Greenway are both being considered in the upcoming town budget. Bailey said advocating for greenway-gap funding in general, rather than for specific gaps, is the more effective approach.

Todd Milam said the PRCR System Plan and the town's Bike Plan will each go before the Town Council for adoption, with the specific meeting depending on the Council's overall agenda. Bailey said the greenway program will have booths at four events this year and described new EcoCounters to be installed along various greenways within about a month; the counters will tally users, distinguish cyclists from pedestrians, record direction of travel, and capture general speeds. The committee's next meeting is scheduled for March 19, 2026. The meeting adjourned at 7:08 p.m.
