What's on this agenda

Orange County's Advisory Board on Aging reviewed second-quarter Master Aging Plan reports on 11 February 2025. Two housing items stood out: the senior housing guide is being updated for summer release, and a developer is seeking rezoning for low-income independent senior housing across from the Seymour Center.

Meeting recap

What happened, drawn from the records published after the meeting. Minutes

Staff described the Maddry Meadows site opposite the Seymour Center, where DHIC proposes independent senior housing for households at or below 60 percent of median income, about $44,000. The same developer built Greenfield Commons off 15-501. A land bank analysis identifying places at risk of gentrification and displacement names Fairview in Hillsborough as an area of displacement.

The department's director was given a county service award for joining cross-department work to keep the senior centre open overnight for unhoused people during inclement weather.

Other Master Aging Plan reporting covered health and wellness classes in rural areas, including a walking class at Efland-Cheeks and tai chi at Cedar Grove and Efland-Cheeks, and food insecurity work: bi-weekly food distributions served 2,319 individuals in 607 families in the second quarter. Of fifteen indicators in the outdoor spaces and buildings group, seven are complete.

The board heard that Fiddlehead Corner had been to the planning board and goes to the commissioners for public hearing, covering both the rezoning and a family care home. Senior Tar Heel Legislature delegates met their state representative and will gather at the General Assembly on 4 and 5 March. The nursing home advisory committee has ten members in five teams, with two members visiting each facility and each group covering two long-term care facilities a quarter.
