The county has opened talks with Mebane about services for older adults there. The county manager, the interim county manager and the aging director met the interim Mebane town manager, who is looking at agreements of the kind Mebane already has with other agencies. The complication is jurisdictional: Mebane sits in the Triad Area Agency on Aging, not Central Pines, and the Triad agency has already discussed putting evidence-based fitness classes at the Mebane Arts Center. Board discussion turned on Mebane's growth and what it will do to services and facilities. Residents from neighboring areas can use general services, but lunch and assistive technology are restricted by funding rules. Members said more space is needed and that a lean budget year and long construction timelines make that hard. Operations run roughly 60 percent county money and 40 percent federal.

The department served more than 500 people during Medicare Part D open enrollment. Two positions are turning over, outreach coordinator and employment services, with decisions on both due in January; the employment discussion will take in how job applications have changed and whether the plan's funding still fits. Workgroup reports covered dementia friends training sessions in July and August that reached 39 people through a church, the university and volunteers, staff tabling at four events in English, Spanish and Chinese with more than 170 direct contacts, Meals on Wheels adding two Mandarin speakers to check on Mandarin-speaking clients, and Walk with Ease classes at Cedar Grove and Efland-Cheeks community centers.

A summer graduate student produced the housing research: a survey of accessory dwelling unit rules with a cheat sheet for each jurisdiction, how to write age-friendly policy into the Orange County and Chapel Hill land use ordinances, how to get the Department on Aging into new housing development reviews, and what other communities do about home repair funding. Members discussed the Unified Land Ordinance as the place to press these points, and noted its public input sessions. The Senior Tar Heel Legislature delegate reported eight issues going to the General Assembly next year, with housing and health care funding at the top.
