Commissioners heard three staff briefings and took no votes. An evaluation panel recommended $23.5 million in hospitality tax funding for 12 projects in nine municipalities, drawn from a record 22 applications requesting $75.7 million. The board plans to vote on the package February 16; Raleigh's city council votes on the $15.5 million joint share February 17.

Staff described FY2027 budget impacts of reopening the county's detention annex, which adds 240 beds in six pods and is projected to open in spring 2027. Staffing options ranged from 60 to 137 positions. Officials said the county was housing about 57 inmates who belong in state prisons, down from a high of 105, at a state reimbursement of roughly $40 a day. Only four of the county's 300 electronic monitoring devices remained available. A third briefing covered disposal options for after the South Wake Landfill reaches capacity, expected between 2040 and 2045; staff called a waste-to-energy facility viable but costly, and said a second study phase will gather public input this year.
