What's on this agenda

The Orange County Human Relations Commission spent most of its 25 March 2025 meeting on the graves at Blackwood Farm, where the county's cultural resources coordinator asked the commission to help erect markers. Staff also told the commission that the equity and inclusion office will be renamed Human Relations and Civil Rights, and that fair housing work will return to it.

Meeting recap

What happened, drawn from the records published after the meeting. Minutes

Peter Sandbeck of historic preservation gave the commission 45 minutes on the graves at Blackwood Farms, with slides and research, and asked to work with the commission and other boards on putting markers at the site. That is the same marker project the commission was still finishing 18 months later.

Staff reported that the county's equity and inclusion office would be renamed Human Relations and Civil Rights, with fair housing coming back into it. They flagged a youth leadership information session on April 17 and a poetry event on April 26 at the Eno River Mill.

With a week to go before the deadline, the Pauli Murray Awards had drawn two student entries and none from adults or businesses, and the vice chair asked every commissioner to nominate one of each before April 1. The awards were set for May 18, though the venue was unconfirmed and the intended speaker had withdrawn for a family medical reason. Five of the eight commissioners attended.

How the votes went

Two votes, both unanimous: approval of the agenda, moved by Commissioner Jones and seconded by Commissioner Hogans, and adjournment on the same pairing.
