What's on this agenda

Chatham County's commissioners met in special session on 30 January 2025 to finish work the weather had cut short nine days earlier. They made their appointments to state and regional boards and settled on a plan for signs honoring George Moses Horton.

The 2022 resolution asked for honorary designation signs along the whole 22.5 miles of US 15-501 in the county. State rules cap an honorary designation at five miles and require the person to have died within the last 75 years, which the poet, who died around 1883, has not.

Meeting recap

What happened, drawn from the records published after the meeting. Minutes

Four commissioners attended and every vote carried 4-0.

The appointments span the regional bodies: the vice chair as delegate to the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization with the chair as alternate, the chair to the community college trustees and to Triangle West, Commissioner Robertson as delegate to Central Pines and to the rural planning organization, Commissioner Gomez Flores to the local emergency planning committee and the Research Triangle Regional Partnership, and the chair with the social services director to the Vaya Health regional board.

On the signs, the county manager traced the history: a 2021 resolution asked to rename the whole highway and for Pittsboro to rename Hillsboro Street, and a 2022 resolution replaced that with an honorary designation and signs. Emergency management then found the state's five-mile limit and the 75-year rule, so a waiver would be needed and the family's agreement with it. The alternative offered was welcome signs at each end of the county, designed with the transportation department and paid for by the county. The board took that route, and adopted the resolution for the two signs on 16 June.

The manager reported that the executive order freezing federal funding had staff checking department by department for what it touches, and that House Bill 24 on downzoning had been filed that day.

How the votes went

The agenda, the state and regional board appointments, and adjournment all carried 4-0.
