What's on this agenda

Chatham County's commissioners, the Town of Pittsboro, the school board and Central Carolina Community College laid their 2025 legislative priorities before the county's state senator and representative over breakfast on 3 March 2025.

The county's first ask was to get its downzoning authority back, which Senate Bill 382 had taken away four months earlier and which had stopped the Unified Development Ordinance from taking effect.

Meeting recap

What happened, drawn from the records published after the meeting. Minutes

Four commissioners attended, and the meeting ran from 9:20 to 10:32.

The county's five priorities were restoring local downzoning authority, farmland preservation, more childcare funding, and affordable housing. Its 2024 accomplishments were finishing the work on broadband access and winning grant money for digital equity.

Pittsboro asked for a revolving loan fund for public safety facilities, downzoning authority, protection of its extraterritorial jurisdiction, and help with stormwater control. The school board's priorities were keeping and paying educators, school safety and mental health, student health, and equitable resources and infrastructure. The community college asked for higher salaries, the Moore Center, a multi-campus center, and automatic enrollment growth funding.

The state senator and representative thanked the presenters, spoke to the importance of federal funding, and took questions.
