Cary's Public Art Advisory Board reviewed two pieces on 19 August: artwork for the Hampton Inn on Alston, commissioned privately by the hotel's developer, and a piano painted for the town's Lazy Daze 50Daze program. Both were listed for review and action rather than discussion.

The rest was updates: a long-term interactive sculpture going into Downtown Cary Park, the Lazy Daze chalk walk and pop-up artworks, and a handout on current capital and temporary projects. The board also hears from its council liaison, the cultural arts manager and its teen council liaisons.

The board approved both artworks in front of it. Jenny Hinton of Park Hospitality Group presented an art bench and bike rack by Jim Gallucci for the new Hampton Inn at Alston, and the board approved the design unanimously on a motion by chair Maria Devore seconded by Harry Searcy. Members asked what the seat would be made of and looked back at earlier pieces, where perforated metal was the usual choice, and discussed the whisper speakers in the design.

It then took a town-owned piano painted by Lisa Gaither into the town's public art collection, again unanimously, on a motion by Devore seconded by Nicholas Fair. The piano will live mostly at Town Hall and may travel to community centers; members talked about the cardinal and dogwood on it as North Carolina and Cary emblems.

Cary Visual Arts reported that Bryant Holsenbeck's "Moons Realigned" would start going in at Speight Branch Greenway in September and that fiberglass molds have begun for the Cows for Kildaire Farm pond, with installation expected in the first quarter of 2027. John Reynolds gave an update on fundraising for the Rainbow Bridge, a possible project with the town; staff said it will come back to the board for design review once departments have vetted it. The meeting ran 49 minutes.

How the votes went

Two votes, both unanimous: approval of the Hampton Inn Cary artwork design, moved by Maria Devore and seconded by Harry Searcy, and acceptance of the Lazy Daze piano into the town's public art collection, moved by Devore and seconded by Nicholas Fair. The July minutes were approved without objection.
