What's on this agenda
Wake County's Health and Human Services Committee meets remotely Monday to hear what the federal budget law known as HR1 will cost the county in food assistance. Staff put the cost at $2.5 million to $4 million in lost revenue this fiscal year, as the federal share of SNAP administration falls from 50% to 25% on 1 October. Twice-yearly Medicaid rechecks are estimated to add $2.3 million to $3.3 million from December. From October 2027 the state plans to pass a benefit-cost penalty down to counties. Staff estimate the county's share at $12 million a year, unless North Carolina keeps its SNAP payment error rate below 6%. Wake's rate was 10.43% in state fiscal 2025 and 7.2% as of May.
Staff also say they plan to move some of the 25 Medicaid positions the board approved this spring over to SNAP to work on that error rate. Cooperative Extension then reports on the 2023 food security plan's ARPA programs, which close in December, and Social Services gives an overview of child support, which collected $44.5 million in fiscal 2026.
