Commissioners reviewed capital and school budget updates for two and a half hours, with no votes on the agenda. Staff put the county's seven-year capital plan at $2.9 billion for Wake County Public Schools and $440 million for Wake Technical Community College, plus county projects including a $200 million detention center expansion, down from an earlier estimate as high as $210 million, and a $249 million county office park, down from as high as $285 million. WCPSS and Wake Tech bonds combined total $829.1 million on the November 2026 ballot, listed separately for each system, with a 50-cent tax levy proposed for FY2028 to support them.

Wake Tech president Dr. Scott Ralls described a new Western Wake campus near Apex built around biopharma and advanced manufacturing, part of $149.1 million the college has proposed for the 2026 bond. WCPSS chief of facilities Mark Strickland reviewed five new schools funded by the 2024-25 bond and a plan to reduce the district's 100 modular classrooms. Superintendent Dr. Robert Taylor presented an operating budget requesting $768.2 million from the county, a $25.3 million increase, after the school board cut literacy coaches from most elementary schools to about 65 of the highest-need schools and dropped a $10.1 million request for additional special education teachers. Commissioners took no votes and gave no formal direction; the school board's final budget request is due to the county by May 15.
