Meeting recap

What happened, drawn from the records published after the meeting. Minutes

WakeMed and Atrium Health leaders briefed the board on a proposed partnership in which Atrium would become the sole corporate member of WakeMed, which would keep its nonprofit status and community-hospital designation. Board members described an 8-6 split of Wake County-appointed and Atrium-appointed directors, a $2 billion capital commitment from Atrium, and a charity-care requirement held at 4.8% of revenue, alongside a proposed expansion of financial-assistance eligibility from 300% to 400% of the federal poverty level. WakeMed CEO Donald Gintzig said the partnership would add more than 3,300 jobs over five years and would not change plans for the roughly $400 million WakeMed Garner Hospital project.

Commissioners questioned WakeMed and Atrium leaders for close to four hours on costs, wages, primary-care access and oversight. County Attorney Roger Askew said changes to WakeMed's Articles of Incorporation and its 1997 transfer agreement with the county both require commissioner approval, and that the item has been postponed to August 4, 2026. No vote was taken; the work session adjourned at 6:26 p.m.
