Advisory board meeting Public facilitiesRoads and transportationParks and recreation

What's on this agenda

The board appointed a vice chair and worked through the town's park construction list. The numbers staff brought were the most striking part: youth basketball registrations up 22 percent on the year and adult athletic registrations up 45.9 percent.

Design concepts for the South Park Community Center renovation have arrived from the architect and come back to this board for feedback at a future meeting. The Library Park design drew heavy public response through the town's engagement platform.

Meeting recap

What happened, drawn from the records published after the meeting. Minutes

Staff reported 174 teenagers registered with the town's teen council, which is chartered by the state and supplies volunteers for the egg hunt, the Independence Day celebration, the haunted trail and the tree lighting. The specialized recreation programme is adding adaptive martial arts, a crafting session and a stretching class for 2026, and staff are pursuing training through a national specialized recreation project.

On the FY25 list, Action Park parking lot construction is expected later this year and the Alston Ridge Greenway is under construction with completion anticipated in the same window. The Hilltop Needmore trail work will replace deteriorating asphalt, with designs wrapping up and repairs held until temperatures rise enough for asphalt to go down properly. The Library Park design drew what staff called significant community feedback through Let's Talk Fuquay-Varina.

Among the FY26 projects, Willow Spring Park sits on a 17-acre property under a 40-year lease from the county. The Banks Road baseball field and lights have gone out to bid, the Action Park field lighting was approved with work starting in February, and the South Park dugouts are under construction and expected to finish before the spring youth athletic season. A greenway design at Terrible Creek and a bridge replacement on the South Lakes greenway are both in the specification stage with the engineering department.

Nobody spoke at public comment. The board adjourned at 8:12 pm.
