Environmental Quality Director Kevin Lindley reviewed sustainability work already under way, including composting pilots, food waste diversion, and landfill emissions tracking, and reported a relatively low recycling contamination rate. A consultant covered how solar development, microgrids, and grid capacity affect local energy planning, and a tension between renewable energy siting and farmland. Another consultant laid out public and private financing options for climate projects, and a third discussed coordinating Chatham's climate work with Pittsboro, Orange County and the wider region through the federal Climate Pollution Reduction Grant.

Commissioners and committee members then worked through an exercise to identify a shared vision for the county's climate future, ranking priorities such as land use, sustainable development and transportation. Participants proposed next steps including a gap assessment against the county's existing plans, a scope for a climate action plan request for proposals, and a communications strategy. The Climate Advisory Committee is set to meet November 20 to review the retreat's results, and Central Pines is scheduled to brief commissioners on December 15, with an updated inventory and RFP scope to follow in January. The board adjourned on a motion by Commissioner David Delaney, seconded by Commissioner Amanda Robertson, 5-0.
