The story so far
Chapel Hill's Land Use Management Ordinance rewrite has run since a 4-4 tie sank the omnibus package on 19 November 2025. The 29 September draft goes to a Planning Commission hearing on 6 October and council hearings on 21 October and 18 November, the earliest date it could be adopted. It walks back the July draft's downtown size limit and restores the cap of four unrelated people per house in lower-density districts.
Affordable housing is the other constant. The council advanced Homestead Gardens on 17 June. On 7 October it holds a hearing on the town's own plan for a new fire station and up to 105 income-restricted apartments at 101 Weaver Dairy Road Extension.

The town reports 72 affordable homes built and 252 preserved in fiscal 2026. On 23 September the council approved $1.47 million to repair the dam at 1714 Legion Road.
