What's on this agenda

Chapel Hill's Historic District Commission reviewed four certificate-of-appropriateness applications: a solar shade structure for a community garden on Wilson Street, a new backyard cottage on Hillsborough Street built around a 200-year-old relocated structure, a rooftop solar and battery system on Gimghoul Road, and a garden house, plunge pool and fencing addition at another Gimghoul Road property.

The commission also planned to approve two routine consent-agenda decisions and elect new officers after Commissioner Hawisher's departure.

The commission approved all four applications as not incongruous with the historic district's special character, each by unanimous vote with one member excused. The Wilson Street solar shade structure and the Gimghoul Road rooftop solar and battery system both drew no public comment and little debate. The Hillsborough Street cottage, built around a roughly 200-year-old structure moved from Chatham County, was praised by a commissioner for not mimicking the historic district's style.

The 724 Gimghoul Road garden house drew the most discussion, with commissioners raising concerns about a proposed sauna's visibility from the street and whether the garden house was more elaborate than the main 1935 colonial-revival house; commissioners ultimately found it acceptable given screening from mature trees. The commission also elected Don Tise as chair and Brian Daniels as vice chair, and noted Commissioner Hawisher's last meeting, as he is moving outside the town's jurisdiction.
