Cary's information services advisory board approved its 2026 work plan on December 1 and moved emergency preparedness and public education earlier in the year, then spent the rest of the meeting on two technology items: an update to the town's technology appropriate use policy and a demonstration from a vendor whose AI agent handles accessory dwelling unit permits.

On the appropriate use policy, the chief information security officer said it will be reviewed yearly and go to the council for approval. Staff cannot download whatever they like — there is a list of approved applications and most users cannot install others. Members asked whether town branding could be used on a personal LinkedIn banner and were told that is discouraged. They also asked for an onboarding module to accompany the policy, and were told an offboarding plan is coming.

Members asked the vendor about data security around accessory dwelling unit information and were told there are guardrails in place, and asked how the agent's speed is benchmarked against handling the same permit without it. They also asked for case studies from cities already using it, and were told those exist.

Under watch list items, a draft economic development study has gone to the council and will come to the board once approved. A sentiment analysis of how residents are feeling had been pulled from the town's social listening tool.

How the votes went

The agenda was amended to add the vendor presentation and adopted without objection, as were the November minutes. The 2026 work plan was approved unanimously on a motion by Murray seconded by McNulty.
