Cary's senior advisory board got a first look on December 3 at the town's Housing Explorer tool, a map meant to show income-restricted affordable housing, age-restricted senior housing and local housing service providers. It is not live yet, and staff asked the board for feedback by its February meeting.

Members liked the shapes and colour coding and called it a good directive tool, but wanted hospitals, urgent care and grocery stores added to the map and asked what 'active' means on a listing. Staff were clear about two limits: it does not show availability in real time and it does not report vacancies.

The housing overview that came with it put Cary's market gaps at the low and moderate income end, with seniors and people with disabilities named as the groups affected. The chart staff showed runs from 30 percent of area median income at $35,829 up to 140 percent at $167,202, with the market covering the upper part of that range.

On accessory dwelling units, the ordinance amendment adopted in June 2025 had produced four applications by December, one approved and three pending.

The staff liaison reported the senior center assessment open through December, a volunteer fair in March, and a health and wellness fair in 2026 that she is deliberately steering away from companies trying to sell things to seniors and toward screenings and health presentations.
