What's on this agenda
Cary's environmental advisory board got its first look on January 13 at the Beyond the South Wake Landfill study, which is examining what the region does with its waste once the landfill is no longer the answer. The consultant offered to come back with a full presentation in the spring.
The board also took a survey of the town's environmental plans and studies, several of which are still being written: the bike plan and the open space plan are both in draft.

The plans already in place include the community plan's sustainability chapter, the sustainability and climate action strategy with its six focus areas and public dashboard, an urban forest master plan, a stormwater master plan, a 2023 solar feasibility study that assessed 79 municipal buildings for rooftop solar, and a 2024 organics feasibility study on further waste reduction.
Staff walked the board through volunteer opportunities tied to its own work plan and floated tour options: the South Cary Water Reclamation Facility, Stevens Nature Center, the compost education center at Bond Park, Good Hope Farm, Fire Station 8, and the South Wake Landfill.
A new council liaison joined the board and briefed it on the Imagine Cary community plan, the 2026 biennial citizen satisfaction survey, the Healthy Homes Cary programme and how residents can weigh in on the budget. The board recessed at the end of business and reconvened to discuss Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer, with The Light Eaters floated as a possible May read.
