Cary's senior advisory board spent its January 14 meeting on GoCary, the town's fare-free bus system, and ended by walking outside town hall to tour a bus and look at its features first hand.

Staff went through the nine fixed routes, all connecting at the Cary Depot, and the door-to-door service, which is open to residents 60 and over as well as riders eligible under the Americans with Disabilities Act. That service runs in three tiers: within three quarters of a mile of a fixed route, anywhere in town limits, and out to Apex, Morrisville, Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill for medical trips only.

Members asked about what it costs to run GoCary, ridership, how wheelchair users are assisted on board, bus rapid transit, a future multimodal centre in downtown Cary, and connections to the Lenovo Center and NC State's Wolfline.

The staff liaison reported about 400 responses to the senior center assessment, and that Cary's score on the Human Rights Campaign Municipal Equality Index rose from 49 to 72. She asked for more feedback on the Housing Navigator presented in December, and flagged a volunteer fair on March 20 and a health fair on April 17.

The council liaison briefed the board on upcoming council meetings, Martin Luther King Jr. and Black History Month programmes, the 2026 biennial citizen satisfaction survey, and Chatham Estates, the mobile home park whose 144 households have until the end of June to leave.
