What's on this agenda

Cary's Public Art Advisory Board reviews two commissioned works: a mural for South Line Brewing by artist Morgan Cook of MCK Creative, and a sculpture for the Wake County Western Regional Center by artist Madeline Wiener. The board also expects an update on safety striping planned for the Black Creek and White Oak Creek greenways, designed by artist Lisa Gaither, and a report on the town's other public art projects.

The board also hears from its council liaison, the town's cultural arts manager, and partner groups including Cary Visual Arts and the Fine Arts League of Cary.

Meeting recap

What happened, drawn from the records published after the meeting. Minutes

Two artworks, two unanimous approvals. The board approved a mural for South Line Brewing by Morgan Cook of MCK Creative, on a motion by chair Maria Devore seconded by Nick Fair, with the work set for February if the weather allows. Members asked whether the paint would sit on the surface, which staff confirmed, and discussed how long mural paint lasts and what upkeep it needs.

It then approved a sculpture for the Wake County Western Regional Center by Madeline Wiener, on a motion by Harry Searcy seconded by Rachel Jordan. Wake County project manager John de Haro described the selection and the artist's ideas, said the center houses behavioral health, dental health and some social services, and told the board the stone comes from Colorado.

Staff also showed the final design for striping on the Black Creek and White Oak greenways. Approval of the December minutes was held over to February.

How the votes went

Two unanimous votes: the South Line Brewing mural, moved by chair Maria Devore and seconded by Nick Fair, and the Wake County Western Regional Center sculpture, moved by Harry Searcy and seconded by Rachel Jordan. The agenda was approved without objection, and approval of the December 17 minutes was moved to February.
