What's on this agenda

Chatham County's Planning Board took two land use cases on 7 July. Lockley Holdings asked for a special use permit for a contractor's storage yard and staging area on 3.9 acres of a 10.02-acre tract at 1656 Campbell Road in Bear Creek, heard as a quasi-judicial matter. The second was a rezoning of about 20.736 acres at 4051 Silk Hope Gum Springs Road from residential to conditional district regional business, for outdoor sports grounds and cricket fields in Hadley Township.

Meeting recap

What happened, drawn from the records published after the meeting. Minutes

The board recommended the Lockley Holdings special use permit 7-2. It then refused the cricket fields rezoning: a motion to recommend approval failed 3-6, with the chair, vice chair and four others opposed, and the board adopted a non-consistency statement 7-3 finding the request inconsistent with a location the land use plan designates as a rural node. Smith, Bell and Feher opposed that statement.

Neighbors spoke against the rezoning, several on traffic. One member remarked before the vote that residents had turned out to say why the project would harm the area and nobody, from the chamber of commerce or elsewhere, had come to say why it would help. The Community Bill of Rights discussion was pushed to a later meeting for want of time.

How the votes went

The special use permit for Lockley Holdings was recommended 7-2. A motion to recommend the Silk Hope Gum Springs Road rezoning failed 3-6. A non-consistency statement on that rezoning passed 7-3, Smith, Bell and Feher opposed. The agenda and the May 12 and June 2 minutes were approved 9-0.
