Chatham County's Climate Change Advisory Committee met by video on 28 May with two carried-over items: an expanded community engagement proposal for the county's climate action plan, and an update on data centers from the county's environmental quality director.

The committee meets monthly through the year and set its next meeting for 25 June. Thirteen voting members, seven for a quorum.

The committee approved a community engagement plan for the climate action plan and sent it to the consultant and the commissioners as guidance.

The proposal is the substance. It asks for a countywide engagement steering committee, place-based meetings around the county, separate roundtables for small and large businesses, and outreach to health, faith, agriculture, housing and youth communities. It puts under-resourced communities first, particularly in Siler City, and asks for translation, stipends for community experts, and childcare and transport, on the view that without those the conversation is one-way. It also asks for a public dashboard tracking who actually took part, by area and by sector.

The chair was clear about the limit: the committee can recommend, but the county and its consultant have to carry it out, because the committee has neither the staff nor the standing to run the logistics.

Four members formed a subcommittee to draft criteria and best practice for a county data center ordinance, and to work with planning staff after the planning board's 2 June meeting.

The environmental quality director reported the climate action plan request for proposals still waiting on purchasing, energy audits complete with a report due mid-June, and bids being prepared for energy work at the Siler City public health building and the Western Senior Center. The committee also agreed to drop formal motions in favor of 'hearing no objection' for routine business.
