What's on this agenda

Chatham County's Climate Change Advisory Committee will take up data centers first. Under old business the agenda lists an update on data centers and a judge's ruling, with two questions beneath it: what the county's response is, and where the draft data center regulations stand. The agenda does not say which case or ruling is meant.

The committee will also get an update on the county's Climate Action Plan and a proposal from Blue Strike, including the plan's steering committee and what advisory role the committee should play from here. Under new business, member Deb Gallagher will raise a recognition program for residents and businesses. Kevin Lindley, the county's director of solid waste and sustainability, will report. The meeting is in person at 28 County Services Road in Pittsboro. The next one, on 22 October, is on Zoom.

Meeting recap

What happened, drawn from the records published after the meeting. Minutes

The committee heard that a Superior Court judgment lets one data center proceed under the county's earlier rules. The minutes say the ruling covers only that development and does not touch the moratorium or future regulations. The planning board is drafting new rules for legal review, and Central Pines was expected to have a model ordinance by the end of the month. Kevin Lindley, the county's environmental director, was to send the committee's recommendations on the draft to the commissioners.

Members voted unanimously to forward Deb Gallagher's community engagement proposal to Blue Strike, the consultant writing the Climate Action Plan. Lindley said the federal energy efficiency grant (EECBG) had been cut back in scope so it can finish by year end. The work covers HVAC upgrades and LED lighting at the Public Health Building in Siler City, lighting at the Western Senior Center, and retro-commissioning at the Justice Center and Ag Center. He said $250,000 would go to replacing older heat pumps. Pam Hawe, Siler City's representative, asked how to serve in the seat; the group suggested monthly reports to the town and a local point of contact. Seven of 13 voting members attended.

How the votes went

The committee voted unanimously to forward Deb Gallagher's community engagement proposal to Blue Strike. The minutes record no other vote.
