What's on this agenda

Chatham County's Climate Change Advisory Committee met on 23 October 2025 to take up what came out of the first day of the county's climate retreat, held the week before, and to set agriculture goals for the climate action plan the commissioners had asked for.

The environmental quality director also reported, and the committee looked ahead to the retreat's second day on 6 November.

Meeting recap

What happened, drawn from the records published after the meeting. Minutes

Eight members made a quorum after some trouble with the meeting link. The committee spent most of its time on how the public gets a say in the climate action plan. Members agreed a roadmap out of the retreat could be the frame for public comment, and one asked for a point person accountable for the plan's development. On agriculture, the vice chair offered three goals: preserve farmland and prevent sprawl, support local food system planning for resilience, and support farmers in climate-smart practices.

The environmental quality director reported two things a reader can act on. The county has joined CPACE, the state program that lets commercial property owners borrow at low interest for energy efficiency, renewable energy, water conservation and resiliency work, repaid through a property lien. And the county won a $350,000 federal block grant for energy audits at thirteen facilities, including two county buildings in Siler City, with the recommendations to be carried out by the end of 2026. The compost pilot's new structures passed inspection, with a soft opening the following week and a public announcement at four collection centers in early November.
