What's on this agenda

Chatham County's Climate Change Advisory Committee met on 31 July 2025, with a guest presentation on spreading basalt fines across farmland: Sunrock's quarry waste used for enhanced weathering, which pulls carbon dioxide out of the air while conditioning soil.

The committee also worked on the climate retreat and selecting new members.

Meeting recap

What happened, drawn from the records published after the meeting. Minutes

Seven members made a quorum. The meeting opened on a White House report attacking the EPA's endangerment finding, which if it holds would strip the basis for regulating greenhouse gases. Members discussed the lawsuits likely to follow.

The commissioners put off approving the climate retreat until their August meeting, with Central Pines Regional Council proposed to run it. The commissioners did approve a new advisory committee policy affecting terms and how committees relate to the board. Central Pines now runs the weatherization program for Chatham as well as Orange County.

The county's greenhouse gas inventory draft was about two weeks from publication. The county holds a gold designation under Charging Smart, which gives local governments free technical help on EV charger deployment. The vice chair chaired the August meeting in the chair's absence.
