Wake County's chief financial officer outlined the $2.28 billion FY27 recommended budget, including a 2-cent property tax increase to 53.71 cents raising $62.15 million. It also includes a one-time transfer of $35 million from the county's reserves into the general fund, which staff called unprecedented. Commissioners also discussed a proposed change letting the county manager sign real estate purchase agreements before board approval. The county has lost two land deals and seen five altered over the past two years.

Commissioners also asked staff about food-security programs under Cooperative Extension, including a farm-to-early-childhood pilot and a SNAP match at farmers markets. Commissioner Adamson asked for $150,000 more for the effort. Commissioners also asked about the funding history for the Helen Wright Center homeless shelter, budgeted at $355,000 for FY27. No votes were taken. Commissioners must submit budget adjustment requests by May 27, ahead of a June 1 vote on the FY27 budget.
