Orange County's Commission for the Environment will close out this year's Climate Action Grant review. It will vote on how to divide $267,750 among sixteen applications that together requested $619,095.

The commission will also introduce new member Leto Copeley and elect a chair and vice chair for the coming year. It will begin work on its 2025 annual report and work plan.

Meeting recap

What happened, drawn from the records published after the meeting. Minutes

The commission voted to keep Regina Baratta as chair and Ian Morse as vice chair, welcomed new member Leto Copeley, and closed out this year's Climate Action Grant round by voting to divide $267,750 among the selected applicants. Members will keep drafting feedback for applicants and set aside changes to next year's scoring for a later meeting. They also started work on the annual report and work plan, using a new, simpler template focused on goals and recent achievements rather than older ones, ahead of a January 16 deadline. Subcommittee breakouts were skipped for lack of time.

Staff reported the commission's RIPPLE environmental awards on track to open December 1 with applications closing February 1, that the county is co-writing a $765,000 agrivoltaics grant with Cooperative Extension, and that three sustainability interns are at work. A Trees for the Triangle giveaway with the Arbor Day Foundation was set for November 30, and a repair café for November 15.

How the votes went

Four motions, all passed with none opposed: approving the October 13 meeting summary (Ferguson/Randall), keeping the chair (Vandemark/Ryan), keeping the vice chair (Schacht/Mather), and approving the climate action grant selections and allocations (Baratta/Schacht).
