What's on this agenda

Orange County's Historic Preservation Commission has no items up for a vote this month; the agenda is discussion only. Staff will brief the commission on a pending National Register nomination for the Efland Milling Company, a mill in continuous use since 1842. Its owners have filed a Study List application with the State Historic Preservation Office. Staff will also outline three archaeological surveys planned for 2026: a ground-penetrating radar study of the county's Old Poor House cemetery, a Phase I survey of the 225-acre Seven Mile Creek Preserve ahead of a new trail, and further GPR work at the Blackwood Farm enslaved burial ground.

The commission is also set to discuss county budget cuts that have eliminated funding to preserve the historic bungalow, barn and outbuildings at Twin Creeks Park's Cate Farm. Staff will propose a field trip to the Henry Calvin Andrews farmstead and update members on a planned interpretive sign for the Cedar Grove baseball field.

Meeting recap

What happened, drawn from the records published after the meeting. Minutes

The commission approved its September 24th minutes and heard a presentation on the Efland Milling Company, whose owners are pursuing National Register status for the mill site, which has operated since 1842. Staff outlined three 2026 archaeology projects: a ground-penetrating radar survey of the county's Old Poor House cemetery, a Phase I survey ahead of a new trail at the 225-acre Seven Mile Creek Preserve, and further GPR work at the Blackwood Farm enslaved burial ground.

Staff said recent county budget cuts have eliminated funding to preserve the historic bungalow, barn and outbuildings at Twin Creeks Park's Cate Farm, which sit unpatrolled and vulnerable to vandalism. Members closed by discussing the recent demolition of the White House's East Wing, noting the building is exempt from the usual federal historic-review process. The meeting adjourned at 8:12 p.m.; the next meeting is December 10th.
