What's on this agenda

The Orange County Historic Preservation Commission will review four candidates for local landmark status: the Currie-Neville Log House, the Ridge Road School, the cemetery at Little River Presbyterian Church, and the Morris Grove School. The commission recommends landmark designations to the county commissioners, who have final say; it does not decide them itself.

The agenda also covers a planned solar panel project on county-owned historic buildings, a proposed addition to the county Board of Education Building, planning for the nation's 250th anniversary, and a proposal for temporary flags on Old Courthouse Square. No item is up for a vote beyond approving the July minutes.

Meeting recap

What happened, drawn from the records published after the meeting. Minutes

Staff walked the commission through four prospective local landmarks. The Currie-Neville Log House, one of the county's oldest surviving log houses, was owned for more than a century by the Neville family, successful Black farmers who lived there into the 1960s. The Ridge Road School, already listed on the National Register, is owned by Jones Grove Baptist Church, whose pastor is weighing a local landmark application as a way to ease the property's tax burden. The Little River Presbyterian Church cemetery, dating to the 1760s, holds a notable collection of 18th- and 19th-century carved stone markers. The Morris Grove School is still waiting on a site visit. Commissioners agreed all four would make worthwhile landmarks, though no formal recommendation was made.

Staff previewed engineering plans for low-profile solar panels on seven county buildings, including Cedar Grove School and the Whitted Center, designed to avoid roof penetrations. They also showed elevation options for a proposed addition to the county Board of Education Building, after Hillsborough's Historic District Commission denied a certificate of appropriateness for an initial design that copied the original 1980s structure. In updates, the commission learned that White Cross AME Church has agreed to host a historical marker for lynching victim Cyrus Guy on its property, clearing the way for fabrication, and that the Strayhorn House's National Register nomination, a separate process from local landmark designation, was submitted to the state in August.

How the votes went
