What's on this agenda
Apex's environmental advisory board has a data center subcommittee, and on 2 September it heard from two outside experts rather than taking any action. David Payne of the NC Department of Environmental Quality was down to cover regulatory processes, permitting and where the agency currently stands. Dr. Tarek Abdel-Salam was to cover cooling methods, their efficiencies and their environmental impacts.
The subcommittee exists to gather information on data centers and to work up amendments to the town's Unified Development Ordinance. Nothing was scheduled for a vote. Cooling is the substance of the water question that has followed data center proposals across this region, so a presentation on it is the groundwork for whatever ordinance language the board eventually recommends.
