What's on this agenda
The Orange County Historic Preservation Commission took up two subjects on 26 March 2025: new research dating Faucett Mill on the Eno to 1823 rather than the late 18th century, and a project to find, map and protect historic Black cemeteries and stone burial mounds. There were no decision items and three members were absent, so the landmark evaluation form and the historical marker project were deferred.

Meeting recap
What happened, drawn from the records published after the meeting. Minutes
On the cemeteries project, members recently relocated the burial ground for enslaved people at the former Poplar Hill plantation, later Julian Carr's farm, near the Vietri property and the speedway, which had been described in the 1970s and lost since. In March, others found a similar burial ground at the Holden family plantation inside Eno River State Park. The commission is also studying stone mounds that appear to follow the practice John Lawson described, of adding a stone when passing a memorial site. Staff met the county's Human Relations Commission the night before to explore a joint project to map these sites and install permanent markers, and will work with the planning department on language directing owners and developers to protect them.
On Faucett Mill, staff presented research by a local historian establishing 1823 as the construction date from a court record permitting a dam on Dry Run. The mill sits where the main road from Hillsborough to Greensboro forded the Eno. It was more than doubled in size, probably in the 1830s or 1840s, converted from a 14-foot water wheel to a turbine by the 1870 industrial census, and much of the early milling equipment survives inside. The building was stabilised in the 1990s; the dam on the Eno stood until Hurricane Fran destroyed it in 1996. The present owners' grandparents bought the property and the family is interested in long-term preservation.
On the Old Courthouse, the county split the architectural and engineering contract into two phases, starting with a full assessment to produce accurate scope and cost estimates, with photo-documentation starting in April. The commission's book project has over 600 photographs, and obtaining permissions has been slow.
