Chatham County's Climate Change Advisory Committee met on 28 August 2025, after the commissioners approved a two-day climate retreat and asked the committee to take a bigger part in it. The committee also previewed applications for its own vacancies under a selection process that had just changed.

Seven members made a quorum. The commissioners approved the two-day retreat format, the first day on climate change effects and what a local climate action plan is, the second on mitigation and resilience. Several commissioners said they want Chatham to be a statewide model, and they want community input and a dashboard to track progress. Central Pines Regional Council could run the retreat without a request for proposals, being a council of governments.

The membership change drew the sharpest comment. Applications used to come to this committee, which reviewed them and recommended candidates; now the commissioners decide with no input from the committee. Two members objected, and one compared it to the same change on the Pittsboro Planning Board.

The environmental quality director reported a new food waste collection pilot and work on electrifying the county fleet, and said having a climate action plan or stated goals is what makes fleet decisions possible.
