What's on this agenda

Planning staff ask the commission how to handle five run-down buildings in the historic district. For three of them, at 217 E. Corbin St., 319 W. Queen St. and 518 N. Nash St., staff recommend starting the town's demolition-by-neglect process. That process lets the commission order an owner to repair a building's significant exterior features. Staff would handle 102 N. Nash St., which does not count as a significant resource, under the minimum housing code. They would drop the neglect process for 315 W. Union St., which staff say is effectively gone.

Two certificate of appropriateness cases follow. One is a new house, breezeway and garage on the empty lot at 316 W. Tryon St., about 30 feet tall with an estimated cost of $900,000. Staff call its roof pitches somewhat steep for the district. Jordan Home Builders LLC seeks to renovate the porch of a 1941 brick house at 514 N. Nash St. and add a two-story rear addition. Staff flag possible conflicts with the design standards for additions and porches. The commission also elects officers.
