What local government did, 26 July – 1 August
Orange County's commissioners appointed Rani Dasi on Tuesday the 28th to the District 1 seat left empty by Commissioner Jamezetta Bedford's death in June. All six votes cast went to her. The board had added the meeting to its calendar for that one purpose: state law gave it until 20 August to fill the seat, after which the choice would have passed to the Clerk of Superior Court. She took the oath four weeks later and the board filled a second vacancy, the Register of Deeds, the week after that.
Two rezonings started through the process this week and both were settled in August. Holly Springs' Planning Board took case 25-REZ-08, a 32-acre proposal on Avent Ferry Road, on the 28th; its council decided it on 18 August. Cary's Planning and Zoning Board found a rezoning at 4312 Jacobs Creek Lane consistent with the town's plan on the 27th, in a meeting that lasted 21 minutes. That one is still open: the council heard the linked annexation on 27 August and put the vote off so both can be decided together.
The Cary board's questions were the useful part. A member asked what the council had meant when it raised the cost of annexing that land, and staff explained the item had shared an agenda with a budget discussion — the exchange turning on a return on investment study, one councilmember recalling that the last such study, almost twenty years ago, found higher density gives the better return.
Chatham County's commissioners had one of the heaviest agendas of the summer on the 27th. Garner previewed a rezoning of 7.07 acres on Fayetteville Road at its work session, Knightdale's Board of Adjustment heard a variance on Hinton Oaks Boulevard, and Chapel Hill's council issued an information packet rather than meeting at all — a distribution with no discussion and no vote, which is worth knowing before you go looking for a decision in it.
8 boards met across 7 governments, with 106 agenda items on file.
Written when 11 of this week's meetings had posted an agenda; 9 have now. The counts below are current.
