The Tree Board met May 20, with member Linda Paynter absent. Members discussed six candidate trees for the 2026 Treasure Tree. They included a black locust on Cameron Street, a white oak in the W. Corbin Street cemetery, a shagbark hickory on Riverwalk, a winged elm at 419 Mitchell Street, and a hackberry and an American holly near Ayr Mount. Member Brian Mayell moved to nominate a Gingko tree on Wake Street instead, and the board selected it as the 2026 Treasure Tree, 6-0. Mayell volunteered to write the Treasure Tree article.

Tim Logue reported that the Invasive Species Removal Team is focusing on privet removal in Gold Park and caging recently planted trees. Tammy Dorfman of the Garden Club emailed the board about scholarship funds raised and the success of a recent plant sale. Staff reported that bark scale treatment is complete, an interpretive sign has been ordered, and a pruning workshop is planned for the fall.

How the votes went

The board selected the Gingko tree on Wake Street as its 2026 Treasure Tree, 6-0. Motions approving the agenda and the April 15 minutes also passed 6-0.
