The Commission for the Environment's last meeting before its summer break, at the Bonnie B. Davis Environment and Agriculture Center and on Teams. The commission recommended one applicant for appointment by the county commissioners and heard from a second who attended as a candidate. Its main business was the State of the Environment report, which the commission writes itself and which is behind: members discussed what was holding it up and were asked to draft their sections over the break, since the commission does not meet in July.

The three subcommittees reported real difficulty getting data rather than analysing it. The water group has found plenty of Orange County water data and cannot make it comparable, so it narrowed its scope to three foundational questions — how much water there is, what quality it is, and which way it is trending — and will arrange meetings with internal and external experts to interpret what it finds. It also argued the county's position only means something against the surrounding counties, the Piedmont and the state. The land group is choosing indicator species from bird counts to stand for the county's environmental condition, and reported difficulty establishing how biosolids are used in the county and what they do. The air and energy group worked through carbon dioxide and nuclear generation and discussed where PFAS belongs in the report, noting landfills as a source.

An environmental awards programme the commission floated in May took shape: no money, recognition only, for individuals, businesses and community groups doing climate, sustainability and stewardship work. Members are adding parameters to a shared document. In updates: two trails vision workshops drew about 70 people between them, the Community Climate Action Grant opens for applications in mid-June, a May clothing swap drew over 100, the Sustainability Annual Report is finished but unpublished, the Perry Hill mini park opens on 21 June, and a member brought postcards from the North Carolina Conservation Network to send to legislators about two utility rate bills moving through the General Assembly.

How the votes went

Three motions, all carried unanimously with none opposed: approval of the May summary, a recommendation that the county commissioners appoint one applicant to the commission, and adjournment at 9:05 PM.
