What's on this agenda

Orange County's Commission for the Environment took up two things on 12 May 2025: whether to create county environmental awards, and how its subcommittees are progressing on the State of the Environment report.

Summarized from the published agenda. Read the agenda itself before acting on it.

Meeting recap

What happened, drawn from the records published after the meeting. Minutes

The commission voted to develop the awards idea further. Staff described recognition-only awards for residents, groups and businesses, with no money attached, modelled on Raleigh and Loudoun County, Virginia. Staff also relayed that the 2007 commission had considered the same thing and decided against it for political reasons. Members backed the idea while some worried it would draw time away from the State of the Environment report; the chair and vice chair will work up a draft.

On that report, the chair asked for the subcommittee check-in sheet to be organised by the June meeting and rough drafts by August. The air and energy subcommittee reviewed a draft on air quality and debated whether to include wildfires, and noted that the pre-2019 reports read better for continuity. The water subcommittee will name the questions it cannot answer for lack of data, and asked environmental health for private well data. The land subcommittee wants the report to press for a county-wide tree canopy study, and to address high-density development, preserving affordable farmland, and wildlife corridors and habitat connectivity.

Staff reported that a solar feasibility study on county facilities is about to begin and vendors are being considered.

How the votes went

Two motions, both carried without opposition: the April meeting summary and moving forward with the environmental awards concept.

From the published minutes.
