What's on this agenda

Chatham County's commissioners worked through the agenda their February meeting never reached, on 17 March 2025. They opened a quasi-judicial hearing on a new EMS station at 9251 US 15-501 N, appointed members to the Planning Board and four other committees, and adopted resolutions for Black History Month, Women's History Month, Black Maternal Health Week and the community library's twentieth anniversary.

The District 4 Planning Board appointment drew four written objections, all of them saying the appointee lives in District 2 while qualified applicants from District 4 had applied.

Summarized from the published agenda. Read the agenda itself before acting on it.

Meeting recap

What happened, drawn from the records published after the meeting. Minutes

All five commissioners attended, and every vote carried 5-0.

The Planning Board appointment is the story. The agenda item covered three seats. At the start of the evening the board amended it, moving the District 2 appointment to consent with Stephen Powers named, and took the rest in the evening. Four residents of District 4, two of them applicants for the seat, wrote asking why the District 4 representative lives in District 2. Their argument was that Hadley Township is rural, under heavy development pressure, and needs somebody with a stake in it. The board made the appointments as recommended.

The EMS station hearing ran four minutes: staff presented, nobody signed up, and the item went to the Planning Board, which recommended it 10-0 on 1 April.

In the afternoon the board heard Vaya Health, the regional transportation planning organization, the Affordable Housing Advisory Committee's annual report, and the conservation working group on land, watershed, climate and natural resources work. On the Planning Board's request to amend the ordinance that establishes it, staff said the changes are housekeeping, and the board's consensus was for staff to work with the Planning Board and bring back a redline. That redline came back through the Planning Board on 6 May.

How the votes went

Every vote carried 5-0: the amended regular session agenda, the consent agenda, the appointments to the Planning Board and the Affordable Housing Advisory Committee, and the resolutions for child abuse prevention month, the community library's twentieth anniversary, Black History Month, Women's History Month, Black Maternal Health Week and line workers.

From the published minutes.

Who spoke

4 members of the public spoke.

  1. A District 4 applicant asked how the board ensures fair and knowledgeable representation for a district that is rural and agricultural, when the appointee has no direct knowledge of it.
  2. A District 4 applicant said she was disappointed her commissioner chose someone from outside the district, and that Hadley Township is under heavy development pressure and needs someone connected to it.
  3. A Hadley Township resident asked why a District 2 resident was recommended for the District 4 seat when four qualified District 4 applicants were available.
  4. A resident urged the board to reconsider and appoint someone with a stake in District 4's future.

Four written comments, all on the District 4 Planning Board appointment, asking why the appointee lives in District 2 when qualified applicants from District 4 had applied.

Read from the records the government published after the meeting. Members of the public are private residents and are not named or indexed.
