What local government is doing this week
Chatham County's commissioners vote Monday evening on a resolution opposing the Enbridge gas pipeline, at the end of a 74-item day that starts with a work session at one o'clock. The county's Agriculture Advisory Board reports to them the same night on the public hearing it held on the pipeline in August, where farmers whose land sits on the route spoke for two and a half hours. Four rezoning hearings and the first plat for Whispering Creek, 238 lots off Bynum Ridge Road, follow.
Wake County's commissioners meet the same afternoon on the county's part in joining WakeMed to Atrium Health. WakeMed needs amended articles of incorporation and a second amendment to its transfer agreement before the two systems can combine. That meeting also opens the 2027 revaluation, with a hearing on the schedule of values set for October 5, and holds hearings on a business development grant for Novartis and on the county's affordable housing performance report.
Housing and land use fill the rest. Cary's council takes the Alston Commons rezoning Thursday, 22.74 acres at NC 55 turning into 500 to 625 apartments with office and commercial beside them, and votes the same night on extending its smoking ban to every town park, greenway and trail and to private places open to the public. Chapel Hill's council votes Wednesday on a $65 annual library fee for Orange County residents who live outside the town limits, and sees the draft of its rewritten development ordinance. Holly Springs' planning board takes 298 apartments at Chandler Crossing and the town's first housing affordability action plan on Tuesday. Fuquay-Varina takes first readings on two rezonings the same evening, one of them WakeMed's, and tables two others again.
Apex's council holds a public hearing Tuesday on a $16 million bond order for streets and sidewalks, renovations to Town Hall and the Tunstall House, and land for a future public safety station. It then votes on the ordinance rewriting how its five advisory boards are filled, a question back before the council for the fourth time since August, and makes the appointments the same night.
Morrisville's council decides Tuesday whether Wake County may build the West Wake Solid Waste Facility on Aviation Parkway, on a hearing that opened September 8 and stayed open for the vote. Durham's council spends Thursday afternoon on contracts, including eight buses for GoDurham at $7.95 million and an $11.5 million waterline on Elizabeth Street. Orange County's Human Relations Commission meets Tuesday with a draft proclamation that would bar county funds, buildings and staff from assisting civil federal immigration enforcement.
32 boards meet across 15 governments, with 304 agenda items on file.
