This week
What local government is doing this week
The NC House convenes Monday with two vetoed bills back on its calendar, which is how a chamber moves toward override votes. Senate Bill 50, "Freedom to Carry NC," would let most adults 18 and older carry a concealed handgun without a permit, keeping the existing permit system as an option. House Bill 437 began as drug-offense penalties near homeless shelters and came back from the Senate as a statewide public camping ban, barring camping on public property unless a local government designates sites that meet state sanitation and safety standards. Both were ratified and then vetoed — Senate Bill 50 in June 2025, House Bill 437 in July 2026 — so one of them has been waiting fourteen months for this. The Senate convenes the same day on a calendar that is the standard order-of-business template with no bills listed, which is not the same as an empty day: bills reach the floor by being added during it.
Data centers have become a regional argument rather than a local one. Cary's council adopted an 18-month moratorium last Thursday, unanimously, on a use its development ordinance does not define at all. Morrisville's council heard a state and regional briefing from the Central Pines Regional Council the same evening. Holly Springs' land use committee meets Tuesday for its third study session under its own 12-month moratorium, hearing from that same regional body. Three towns, three different stages, and no application pending in any of them.
Orange County's commissioners fill a second vacancy Tuesday, this time the Register of Deeds, five weeks after appointing Rani Dasi to the District 1 seat left by Commissioner Jamezetta Bedford's death in June. The same meeting names the county's Crisis Diversion Facility for her. The county's planning board meets Wednesday on a subdivision concept plan for 17 acres in Cheeks Township and on ordinance amendments the planning director says changes in state law now require, and its parks council hears what the adopted budget and capital plan mean for parks.
Chapel Hill's Planning Commission takes its development ordinance rewrite twice on Tuesday: a 6 p.m. session on housing density and environmental resilience, then a separate Zoom-only quasi-judicial session at 7 where speaking means registering for the webinar in advance. Hillsborough's Historic District Commission reviews three certificates of appropriateness Wednesday, and Garner's council takes a public hearing on a commercial annexation on Timber Drive. Much of the rest is work sessions and advisory boards, where comment is taken and nothing is decided.
41 boards meet across 14 governments, with 226 agenda items on file.
Written when 41 of this week's meetings had posted an agenda; 42 have now. The counts below are current.
